Grants for planting trees and creating woodlands
There are many grants available for woodland creation. You can use the grants to help you plan and develop your new woodland. The grants are available throughout the year.
You can also get trees and grants from the Woodland Trust if you are:
- planting a single tree or a few trees
- part of a community group
- a school
- a farmer

Woodland opportunity map
The woodland opportunity map will help you check which areas are suitable for new woodland creation. It will help you to make sure the trees you plant are in the right place to achieve the maximum benefit.
You should use the woodland opportunity map before applying for any grants.
Small Grants Woodland Creation scheme
If you are planting more than 0.1 hectares (0.25 acres) and less than two hectares (4.94 acres), you can apply for the Small Grants Woodland Creation scheme.
Your land must not be in a protected area with ancient woodland or individual ancient or veteran trees.
Woodland Creation Planning scheme
If your land is:
- not in a protected area with ancient woodland or individual ancient or veteran trees
- is over two hectares (4.94 acres)
- is at least 0.25 hectares (0.62 acres) in size
you can apply for the Woodland Creation Planning scheme.
The scheme offers grants of between £1,000 to £5,000 to develop plans for new woodland creation. You can use the funding to get a registered woodland planner, they will help you to develop a woodland creation plan.
Once the plan is in place, you can apply for the Woodland Creation Grant scheme to get funding for tree planting.
Woodland Creation Grant scheme
If you are planting more than 0.25ha (0.62 acres) you can apply for this scheme. There is no maximum size limit.
The Woodland Creation Grant scheme provides funding for tree planting and fencing. Farmers and landowners can apply for this scheme.
You will need to apply for the Woodland Creation Planning scheme and have a plan in place before you can apply for this scheme.
The Woodland Investment Grant
The Woodland Investment Grant is for landowners and managers including not-for-profit organisations. You can use this grant to create woodlands for local communities to use.
The scheme hopes to create, restore, and enhance woodlands as part of the National Forest for Wales programme.
This scheme provides financial support for you to:
- create new woodlands
- enhance and expand existing woodlands
Your woodland must have the potential to be part of the National Forest for Wales programme in the future. This means your woodland must be:
- well-managed
- accessible to people
- able to give local communities the opportunity to get involved in woodlands and nature
Tiny Forests in Wales
Tiny Forests in Wales is a new grant scheme that is part of the National Forest programme. It offers grants of between £10,000 and £40,000 if you are planting trees on one site, or up to £250,000 for multiple sites.

If you want to take part, you will need to apply through the Tiny Forests in Wales National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Tree Council
If you’re planning to plant trees in your community then The Tree Council grants can help.
The grants are for schools, community groups and Tree Warden Networks. You can use these grants to plant trees, hedges, and orchards.
